ESS provides short-term assistance [72 hours] to those who are forced to leave their homes because of fire, floods, earthquakes or other emergencies. This assistance includes food, lodging, clothing, emotional support and family reunification.
The program is based on volunteerism, and is dependent on the willingness of individuals in the community to help plan for the well-being of their neighbours and fellow citizens in the event of a disaster.
ESS is one of five volunteer programs in BC supported by the Provincial Emergency Program [PEP]. These Public Safely Lifeline volunteer groups include Search and Rescue, Emergency Radio Communications, Road Rescue and PEP Air.
The province through PEP, provides funding for short term basic evacuee needs and assists local authorities by providing ESS support, training and liability coverage to volunteers.
